mise-en-scene of our vid

Characters: Band- Tom Turrell as himself, Arthur Hagues as himself, Dan Newns as himself, Dan Palmer as himself and Paul Clayton as himself.
Other Characters- Tom's Dad as himself, Josh Kington? as a 'bad boy'.

Props: Instruments e.g. guitars, microphone, Bass, drum. Bike, umbrella, watering can, metro newspaper, music playing device.

Costumes: Band- All the members will be wearing conventional clothing to fit the genre e.g. baggy jeans and t-shirts with trainers and possibly a hoody.
Tom's dad will be wearing typical jeans and t-shirt also.
'bad boy' will be wearing stereotypical clothing e.g. trackie bottoms and branded trainers.

Lighting: We have planned to use natural lighting for the outdoor scenes because the song is meant to portray the annoyance of using public transport on any given day. For the indoor scene, electrical lamps are likely to be used in order to get a good visual so we can portray the concept of what is going on clearly to the audience.

fliming

on our fist day of filming uncoventionally we filmed the ending fist this was due to the avalibility of the rest of the band. for the finally of the song for the last two choruses we decided it would be a great idea to film at a bus stop with the whole band. the obvious reasons for this is that the song is about public transport and its unreliability, and so we thought by filming at a bus stop this incorparates the story of the video and also gives the idea that the and may be waiting to get to a gig as they are all there with there instruments and by the words of the song "all i want to do is get to my ... destination". For the majority of the shots a tri-pod was used to keep the camera steady and keep the focus on the action within the frame. One one occasion, however, a hand-held shot was used making sure that the mise-en-scene used gave the impression that the band were being watched by an guest/ passer by. This gives the impression that they are a popular band as many want to come and watch them. It also gives the impression that anyone can listen to their music as the band do not tell the assumed 'watcher' to go away. The main effect it gives, however, is to create realism and again highlight their 'untidy', Grungy music style.

we also ued a range of angles. This provides a sense of the band's superiority to other bands of a similar genre, and shows that they are original and different. This is the image of which most of the target audience wish to be associated. also, both long-shots and close-ups were used to emphasize different aspects of the band at different times, e.g. dirreent lines of the song are given different epasis. The shots main purpose', however, were to present the band at the bus stop and show them playing not to a crowd but in a non realistic enviroment wher you wouldn't exspect t see a band.

in beening outside there was no need to adapt the lighting as it was a nice day for filming.

bands alike splutter

to try and give you an idea of the type of band splutter if you research bands under the record lable fat wreck recorrs A lot of bands with similar genres can be found . This record company has been set up by the basist and lead singer of the a famous band with a similar genre; NOFX. A list of some similar bands to splutter are:
Mad caddies, Less than jake, Rise against, Pour habit, Strung out, Random hand and more.

Many of the bands under the fat wreck chords label express their political views against the war in Iraq and love for drinking lyrically. They are indignant on playing and creating music for the main purpose of having fun, not for making money and getting famous. This is very similar to splutters status and motives as a band. This gives splutter a specific representation that is common for many bands of their genre.

poster and magazine advert

Artist: NOFX
genre: punk

generic conventions: band name clearly written across the top, information wished to be shown clearly written. humorous picture of the band. abstract colours used, also a funny line about the band.

font style/ lettering: band name written in a sketched like font, the rest of the writing is in a normal font so as to be easily read so that the reader can get all relevant information.

sound: fast paced, upbeat music that has the image of not caring and just having a laugh and making fun but they do actually talk about allot of political problems and put allot of emphasis in their certain view points. you can see this in the CD cover as although they seem to be having a joke the image is actually quite iconic in showing there views.

colour: there are only produced colours on the advert as the photo that is used is made black and white but it is also given a orange/brown tinge so as to match the rest of the poster, as in the background there is a dark brown patch in the middle and from it stripes of orange and yellow.

image: the main image is a humorous picture of the band were they are all together but yet doing there own different posses. there is also the same picture but in black and just the silohet of the band inside the "o" of NOFX.

mise_en_scene: background that contains yellow and orange stripes with a brown patch in the middle. across the top is the band name, written underneath is the dates and venues of their tour. across the bottom is a picture of the band wearing traditional/ sterotypical punk rock clothing, eg the checkerd swet band, vest top.

representation: Despite the fact that punk rock bands generally shy away from using images of themselves on the front cover of CD covers and advertising campaigns, the fact that they used a black and white image of the band in silly poses and with funny facial expressions tie into the generic convention that this kind of music generally doesn't take many things seriously and takes the fun from serious issues and makes a joke out of them Many other bands i have looked at from this genre of music do not usually use images of themselves on the front cover of most things. However the way that this band is representing themselves by posing in silly stances and wearing traditional punk/rock clothing. This use of mise en scene connotes the genre immediately and tells the audience that they want to address issues and their audience by not taking things seriously. It also advertises what kind of gig they are likely to play as well. The audience is likely to think that they are going to have a fun night, forgetting about things that they dislike or that they are worried about because the band are portraying this image directly. This links to the ideology that they are appealing to individuals and people who want to stand out from what is deemed average by way of audience gratification. This advert advertises individuality in the sense that the genre is not as popular as mainstream artists, yet it can still be enjoyed, if you are part of 'that group' who wants to address issues differently. This advert is stressing the benefit of being a kind of member of a certain group of people. Using the same typography in their title for everything they make and represent is also in keeping with this genre. This makes the band recognisable to everyone who had seen the name previously.

magazine advert analysis

artist: the bronx
genre: punk rock

generic conventions: band name clearly shown across the poster, information wished to be shown clearly written. only relevant info on the advert to make it obvious and not to bore the audience by having to read into it to much, an image to attract the viewer.

font style lettering: the font seems to be a hand made one as it looks to be hand drawn either by hand or on a computer, this may be so that the reader feels that the band have put some effort into the product and that they don't take themselves to seriously.

sound: The sound of this band is very brash and aims to make a statement much like many other bands in a similar genre. The sound is reflected on the album cover because it is not an image that would be used for a mainstream artist.

colour: not real colours as there is no photo, predominantly blue background, orange fire coming from the gray buildings, the band name also in blue. no real impact from the colours, but maybe the fire may be eye catching.

image: the image is of a cartoon Mexican wrestler. the wrestler is masked and also has wings, a wrestling wearing a costume and belt. the wrestler seems to be jumping/flying away from havoc behind him as there is a gray city of buildings on fire there is also smoke.

mise-en-scen: the poster contains a cartoon image which fills the hole advert, the main attraction is the winged wrestler of whom is flying/jumping away from a fire. the fire is issueing from a city of buildings, different shade of blue create a smoke effect. the background is plain blue. band name clearly written across the bottom, also across the bottom is the bands suport acts, the date of there gig and the venue.

representation: there is allot of representation in this advert in non obvious places, for examplethe wrestler may come across as a random picture with no relevence when actually the wrestler actually represents their heritage, i think the band did this to show the pride for what they do but also to show how they respect the heritage just like everyone else which brings them down to earth. i also feel the wings represent libberation and that maybe they feel their music can help people out of troubled times represented by the fire, howevr there may be a second meaning to the to the fire in that it might not be serious but to show that there gig will be fun and they will in a way tear up the city when they play thier gig. finally i also belive that the hand drawn nature of the advert show that the band care about it in that more effort has been put into producing it for the thier fans.

Artist: linkin park
album name: Meteora
genre: rap/punk rock

generic conventions: The Band name, album name and tracks are all shown on the cover.
also not a real picture and so induces fantasy.

font style/ lettering: Linkin Park often use ‘Impact’, or ‘Rockwell’ styled fonts for their album covers. This gives a familiar idea to fans of what content will be contained within the album. The Linkin Park logo, at the time, is also on the cover which has specific meaning to already familiar fans.

sound: very urban, punk rock music with rap like singing and lyrics. allot of attitude put into the music.

colour: The only colours contained within the album cover are a green/mucky beige colour. (There is also black and white which aren’t technically colours.) This colour represents pollution and gives the album cover an urban look. This links to the music of the album.

image: graffiti artist is presented painting with typical ladders, sheets and graffiti cans for equipment. The gas mask again highlights the mukey, polluted colour of the picture and indicates more fumes than just the paint cans.

mise-en-scene: The picture displayed on the CD cover only takes up about one half of the cover. This is unusual in comparison to most other CD covers as the picture usually takes up the entire space used for the cover. The description of the picture can be found in object or you could just look at it yourself on the previous page! The cover also contains text of the band name, album name, tracks and a ‘features:’ sticker. The rest of the background is black.

representation: The graffiti artist is shown concentrating on his work in a clean environment with a safety mask. He is not represented as a vandal but as an artist focusing on his work. for me this represents how the band feels hoe the world See's them as being criminal rebellious and off the rails but really they are making art and the kind they like and that really they just enjoy what they are doing. also there may be some controversy in the position the man is sitting as it is quite a venerable position for a man of whom is advertising a punk band.
